Sandra enjoyed her semester abroad immensely.
For the semester abroad in the winter semester of 2024/2025 in the bachelor's degree program in International Business & Management at the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol, Sandra swapped the Alps for the Andes. In addition to gaining in-depth knowledge, she also gained cultural insights and valuable life experiences.
The decision to spend a semester abroad at the Universidad Mayor in Chile was an easy one for Sandra. Cultural diversity, impressive landscapes and an ERASMUS+ International scholarship made it possible for her to realize her dream.
INSIGHTS INTO DAILY LIFE AS A STUDENT
For Sandra, daily student life at the Universidad Mayor was varied and full of new impressions. During her first semester, she shared a flat with others and had to share the use of a bathroom and kitchen. This living situation helped her to make contacts quickly and to improve her Spanish skills in everyday situations. “People are very supportive, even if you don't speak perfect Spanish at first,” says Sandra. This support also helped her prepare for class, since all courses were taught exclusively in Spanish.
A typical day began with lectures in the morning, followed by coffee breaks with Chilean and international students. Shorter classes took place in the afternoons, leaving the evenings free for cultural activities. Sandra took full advantage of these opportunities to experience Chilean culture: open-air events, salsa dance classes and the lively cultural scene were among her highlights.
CULTURAL DIFFERENCES AND HIGHLIGHTS
Sandra was particularly impressed by the relaxed way of life of the Chilean people. Although the lecture schedule was often changed at short notice, more group work took place and topics were occasionally rescheduled, she found daily life to be surprisingly stress-free. “Problems are often handled more relaxed and finding solutions is much less complicated here,” she says in her description of her impressions.
Highlights of her journey included traveling through South America. In particular, she will never forget the Atacama Desert or the waterfalls in Argentina.
RECOMMENDATIONS AND TIPS FOR FUTURE EXCHANGE STUDENTS
Sandra enthusiastically recommends Chile as a destination for an extended stay abroad. The country offers familiar standards, but at the same time a wealth of opportunities to discover culture and nature. Despite the increased organizational effort, she felt well supported by the FH Kufstein Tirol and the Universidad Mayor.
Sandra's semester abroad in Chile not only helped her develop professionally, she also came back personally enriched. The unforgettable impressions and valuable experiences inspired Sandra so much that she decided to spend her second semester abroad in Chile as well – this time living with a Chilean friend.
